Disaster Relief
Personal tragedies Know No Season
In Arkansas, tornado season comes around regularly. So do ice storms, floods, fires….Arkansas Rice Depot is ready to help, with the aid of supporters and volunteers
Arkansas Rice Depot distributes Disaster Relief kits to disaster victims to help them get through a very tough time. Kits are also given to children in need whose parents don’t provide their basic needs. The kits provide comfort and a boost in self-confidence during what can be a very dark time. Your group can help us by assembling kits. We provide disaster victims with two types of kits: health kits and meal kits. Health kits provide soap, toothpaste and other personal hygiene supplies that may be lost in a storm. Food kits provide shelf-stable food so that a family can eat when they're stuck in a motel with only a microwave, or working long hours at their property with no time for a meal break.

Jimmy and his family recently moved into a trailer when their house in Thornton, AR burned down. The family lost everything. Jimmy returned to Arkansas to care for his ailing father after his mother died. "I was making a pretty good living in Nebraska herding cattle," he says, "but it’s hard to make a living around here…God has always been good to me, and I just know things are going to change. Someone told me about Rice Depot and I think the food distribution is just wonderful! It is great for kids because we know they will receive additional food that is needed."
Augusta's home in Strong, AR was hit by a tornado. She says, "I cannot say too much without getting emotional, but my daughter was sleeping in her trailer. She recognized the noise and ran into her closet. She felt her trailer being picked up and thought she would never see her mother and father again! Then the trailer dropped to the ground." In an instant, Augusta's daughter was homeless and most of her possessions gone. Outside help was slow to hear about this remote community, but Arkansas Rice Depot was the first to arrive with food and supplies. "We are truly grateful for this assistance to our families,” says Augusta.
